4 out of 5 stars Great but not perfect   September 8, 2010
Mike Aymami (San Bruno, CA United States)
I read all the reviews, bought the product, and here is the short version. Please note this review is from the position that this is a 200 USD machine and not a $2000 Rocket/Giagga or some other top end model.

Pro:
1 - Excellent espresso, frothy & complex crema, very smooth and even. Not bitter at all. Noticeably better than anything in this price range.
2 - Easy to use, simple (its a manual machine - if want/need auto suggest you get it)
3 - Great steam & steam control, can texture even soy very well
4 - Cup warmer is actually pretty functional (imagine that)
5 - Side access water, huge feature if you on a counter top (like say 99.9% of us) and not hard wired for water like top end machines
6 - Decalcifying solution included - not huge deal but really unexpected at this price range out of the box
7 - Excepts a much finer grind than anything in this range. Means a much more diverse and layered shot but also requires a descent grinder.

Con:
1 - Portafilter is a mixed bag. It works great but the mechanical design is hit and miss. Yes it's nice that is stands sturdy on the counter. But the lock mechanism sucks and if you don't intentionally apply pressure it will dump the basket and spent coffee with it in the trash every time. Lame. Also, it's very stubborn to get into place on the machine. Doesn't have that positive locking in place feeling that other machines have. But works great just some minor issues
2 - Tamper is ok but you do have to push down on the top of machine as noted. You can always get a quality one anyway after market.
3 - Steam wand doesn't sit over drip tray as noted by others. Not really a big deal because this puppy gets to full steam very fast and expels very little water if any. That said however it's a bigger issue that you need to be careful not to touch the steam wand at the elbow. Its single wall and can get hot. A common feature for any machine under 1.5k and again very minor.
All in all for 200 this machine puts out a fantastic product with a few minor frustrations. It's a clear keeper as the output far out shine the small issues. You will struggle to produce a better espresso without spending near 2k.

5 out of 5 stars Great espresso   September 3, 2010

I have had this espresso machine for 2 months now. I love it. I had some trouble figuring it out at first, but once I got it working it makes great espressos. We grind our beans fresh so the espresso tastes delicious, much like the ones I had in Europe.

4 out of 5 stars Bargain Espresso Maker   September 1, 2010
R. Hayes (Augusta, GA)
I originally bought a EC-155 (see review) and upgraded to the 702. Main differences are size and functions, ie push-buttons instead of knob. It functions pretty much the same as the 155, with the steaming nozzle a little different though it is easier to clean than the 155. First, I use Lavazza coffee and always get good crema. The steamer is quirky, shoots out water at first so maybe mine is malfunctioning but I can just shoot the water first then steam the milk. The warming tray will warm a cup if it sits there for an hour. Overall, it works good as can be expected, just hope I get more than 4 months of use out of this one.

4 out of 5 stars My E-maker is my friend   September 1, 2010
Michael Oren (Bend, OR)
This machine works very well. The brewing is simple and quick. The cleanup is simple. I have enjoyed using it for three months and my wife has become a cappuccino addict. I thought it was reasonable priced. My second machine is a Mr. Coffee and, though not as well made and non-pump, does pretty good as well.

The only heartburn I have is that the frothing "thingy" is a little to close to the machine. It takes some getting used to and I think if it only had been angled out from the tank it would be perfect.

I don't think most people would be dissatisfied.

3 out of 5 stars very satisfied   August 20, 2010
Sam Sailor (New York, NY)
I had an intro model Krups machine for about 10 years and finally had to replace it. I chose this machine mainly based on price, but I'm very happy with the espresso it makes. I love crema and after figuring out the "how long do I let it warm up to get the perfect cup" formula, it's consistently putting out good coffee. I was disappointed that the machine itself is not all metal (the plastic drip tray for example), but it doesn't affect the espresso.
