4 out of 5 stars A great coffeemaker, just don't use a metal filter basket.   July 29, 2010
Cari Lyford
I fell prey to Amazon's "customers who buy this also buy that" marketing and bought the metal filter basket when I bought this machine. After three messy overflow incidents, I finally figured out that the problem was not the coffeemaker, it was the combination of the filter basket and the way this machine works. The basket is solid plastic at the base, which is exactly where the coffee needs to drain into the carafe. The water couldn't drain through quickly enough and it spilled out the top. I switched to paper filters and haven't had a problem since in the two months I've owned it. In fact, this coffeemaker makes the hottest coffee I've ever had from a non-industrial machine.

The beeping others have complained about is a little annoying: it beeps 5 times when 2 or 3 times would be sufficient. However, I have three small children and I don't think it has ever caused them to wake up. The screw-on cover others have talked about has worked fine for me. One time after the coffee was already made, I noticed that I had screwed the cover on crooked and it had still worked fine with no spillage. You don't have to be a rocket scientist, honestly. As for the small opening that makes the carafe difficult to clean, as a former barista, I can tell you that just rinsing it out daily and using a de-scaler every couple of months is enough cleaning for a stainless steel carafe.

I think you'll be happy with this coffeemaker if you use paper filters. The coffee is good and hot, and stays that way for hours. The minor problems others have mentioned are negligible and avoidable. It's a good coffeemaker for a fair price.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic coffeemaker!   July 29, 2010

Easy to use--Thermos holds heat for over 9 hours--that's when I dumped last cup! This is fantastic and efficient for entertaining--especially since I purchased with it a second thermos! Coffee flavor remained fresh!

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Fresh All Day   July 25, 2010
Martha Lohan (houston, tx)
My goodness! I've never heard such petty complaints before! Loud alert beeps, sputtering water, cold carafe, blah, blah, blah. I'm glad I listened to the positive reviews. This product rocks compared to my old Mr. Coffee regular coffee maker.

I have found that if one follows the product instructions, it works just as advertised. The instruction manual states to warm the carafe by filling with hot water and discarding before brewing the coffee. I did so THE NIGHT BEFORE and used auto-brew. I made my coffee about 5:30 a.m. It was hot, of course, when I had mine and hot when my hubby had his at 10 a.m. and noon. And it was still hot when I discarded the old at 7 p.m. The coffee tasted fresh all day long as compared to my Mr. Coffee. I have had it for a few weeks now and am so happy with every aspect of this Cuisinart Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker.

The top may be a bit difficult for arthritic people to use. The top needs to be put on precisely and tightly. This keeps your coffee fresh and hot for such long periods of time so I have no problem with this.

The coffee maker is sleek and stylish and unlike most stainless steel, this product does not show excessive fingerprints and smudges.

I did purchase the Amazon-recommended water filter which doesn't appear to work with this model. I have not been able to find a way to install them and the manual does not mention any way to install them. This seems to be a glitch in the Amazon system and not with Cuisinart.

1 out of 5 stars I'm so unhappy with it that I'm returning it....   July 24, 2010

I am very disappointed with this coffee maker, and have returned it. I question the objectivity of the top rated positive review that itemizes the various complaints that are common in the other reviews. It's as if they have a stake in sales of the coffee maker. #1, the 3 beeps signaling that coffee brewing is complete is quite annoying. Anyone that makes coffee while others sleep should avoid this coffee maker unless you live in an expansive McMansion, because I can certainly hear it in the most distant bedroom in my 3000+SF home. There is no way to turn it off which is ridiculous for such a costly model with all the bells and whistles. #2,it is quite tall so make sure it will fit under upper cabinets if you intend to store it there. #3, I'm totally disappointed with the carafe. The opening in the top has a very small diameter, presumably to increase the heat retention. The significant trade-off of that is that it is very difficult to clean. If I had kept the coffeemaker, I would have needed to purchase a special bottle-type brush for cleaning the carafe. The screw top cap with floating ball stoppers isn't worth the drawbacks. I would prefer a simple tipping top like my old Braun unit. The top is designed to screw down at an angle (not level) so it always looks like it's not on right (fooling guests and people not accustomed to using it). And the "pour" position isn't easy to see in dim light (and for me without glasses). I suppose I could learn the "Cuisinart sensibility", but life is too short for that. The final straw for me was a friend making coffee for the first time and somehow (never figured it out exactly) didn't get the top on correctly resulting in a huge mess of overflowed coffee grounds, etc. when the coffee in the filter didn't empty into the carafe and overflowed. And the cradle for the filter basket apparently isn't removable making the cleanup a total pain in the you know what. I don't need that kind of complication from a silly coffee maker. I prefer things designed with intuitive ergonomics, simplicity and fundamental ease of use including cleaning. More power to the people that love this coffee maker, but I'm not one of them. I very rarely return items, but this is one of those times. I cant' imagine enduring the intense regret from the purchase every time I make coffee. Happy brewing to you all.....
