Preset this coffeemaker for your desired wake-up time, add coffee beans to the grinder, and in the morning the beans are ground to a medium grind and hot coffee awaits in the 10-cup stainless steel, double-wall insulated thermal carafe. You can also program the machine to start brewing at the end of a dinner party to avoid having to get up from the table, or to have hot coffee waiting after a brisk winter walk. When making fewer than five cups of coffee, use the 1-to-4-cups setting to improve extraction and heat; coffeemakers without this setting often lack the time to heat up properly, and coffee comes out cooler. Definitely design flaws March 10, 2010

The unique thing about this coffee maker is the combination of grinder and brewer all in one. The steel carafe keeps the coffee hot for as long as I need it to (about 2 hours). This is actually the SECOND of these I have bought, because there aren't many comparable models. I threw the first one out because I assumed that it had worn out. Both machines had the same problem. After a few months of use, during the brewing process, the coffee spilled over the top of the carafe and flooded the counter. This coffee maker has one of those "interrupt" valves in the bottom of the filter basket that allows you to take the carafe out during the brewing process and pour yourself a cup. I tried removing the carafe and realigning it numerous times. Nothing seemed to work. Last week, I decided that the problem might have been that I was using the gold wire filter basket without a paper filter inside, resulting in fine coffee grounds clogging up the opening in the carafe that allowed the coffee to flow in. I washed all the parts very well and started using a paper filter. So far, the problem has not resurfaced.

Save your money. I thought this machine would be the bomb! Its a bomb alright, but not in a good way.
I owned a coffee shop for 7 years, brewing countless pots of coffee with a $30 Mr Coffee unit, and never had a problem.
This unit's problems: not user friendly, terribly messy and time consuming to clean every single morning, brew basket "pops" open about 1/2 the time we use it spewing coffee and grounds all over the countertop and down the cupboards onto the floor, now (I've had this unit 6 months) it has started to brew 2 cups, beep that its done, and then start brewing all over again with beeps every few minutes. Not sure why, no apparent settings to create or avoid this. I am digging out my warranty, putting it back in the box and shipping it off to them for some kind of reimbursment. Piece of junk!!!!!
Yes it's shiny. Yup- it looks cool on the counter. But a shiny unit that says Cuisinart is all your money goes towards...a shiny turd is still a turd on the inside.
